Default LSATinator’s Sample LSAT Practice Questions: Logic Game #1

Recommend this post:
I will periodically post various types of Sample LSAT Practice Questions that I have created. These are primarily meant for board members to practice their LSAT skills, but perhaps eventually we can turn it into some kind of weekly or monthly contest.

These questions are NOT copyrighted by the LSAC; they were created solely and entirely by me from scratch. So feel free to discuss answers and reasoning. I did my best to keep them true to real-LSAT questions, and all of them should be solvable. However, if you encounter any inconsistencies or errors in any of my questions, please send me a private message as soon as possible.

Good luck!

Logic Game #1

Questions 1-5

There are exactly six rock bands in this year’s Battle of the Bands: Atrophy, Bionics, C-sharps, Disrupted, Egos, and Fallout. Each band will perform exactly once in one of six time slots, and no bands will perform at the same time. The following conditions apply:
  • Fallout does not perform immediately before or immediately after Bionics
  • Fallout performs before Atrophy
  • Atrophy performs immediately before or immediately after Disrupted
  • Egos perform fourth.

1. Which one of the following could be an accurate list of order that the groups perform in the Battle of the Bands

(A) Atrophy, Disrupted, Fallouts, Egos, Bionics, C-sharps
(B) Fallouts, Egos, Bionics, C-sharps, Disrupted, Atrophy
(C) Bionics, Fallouts, Atrophy, Egos, Disrupted, C-sharps
(D) Fallouts, C-sharps, Bionics, Egos, Atrophy, Disrupted
(E) Fallouts, Disrupted, Atrophy, Bionics, Egos, C-sharps

2. If C-sharps perform immediately before Fallouts, then which of the following could be the fifth band to perform?

(A) Egos
(B) Disrupted
(C) Fallouts
(D) Bionics
(E) C-sharps

3. Which of the following CANNOT be true?

(A) Disrupted performs second
(B) Fallout performs third
(C) C-sharps perform third
(D) Bionics performs after Egos
(E) Disrupted performs after Bionics

4. If Atrophy performs sixth, which one of the following must be true?

(A) Fallouts performs first
(B) Bionics perform third
(C) Fallouts perform third
(D) Disrupted performs third
(E) C-sharps perform second

5. Suppose the restriction that Egos must perform fourth is replaced by the restriction that the Egos must perform fifth. If all of the other restrictions remain in effect, and if the C-sharps perform after the Bionics, which band must perform fourth?

(A) Fallouts
(B) Bionics
(C) Disrupted
(D) Atrophy
(E) C-sharps

Neat idea. That would be pretty cool if you made it into a contest.

#5 is kind of tough

Number one is (D)

I solved it by eliminating answer choices based on the rules alone:

Quote:
* Fallout does not perform immediately before or immediately after Bionics
* Fallout performs before Atrophy
* Atrophy performs immediately before or immediately after Disrupted
* Egos perform fourth.

1. Which one of the following could be an accurate list of order that the groups perform in the Battle of the Bands

(A) Atrophy, Disrupted, Fallouts, Egos, Bionics, C-sharps violates rule 2
(B) Fallouts, Egos, Bionics, C-sharps, Disrupted, Atrophy violates rule 4
(C) Bionics, Fallouts, Atrophy, Egos, Disrupted, C-sharps violates rule 1
(D) Fallouts, C-sharps, Bionics, Egos, Atrophy, Disrupted CORRECT ANSWER
(E) Fallouts, Disrupted, Atrophy, Bionics, Egos, C-sharps violates rule 4

1) D
2) B
3) C
4) E
5) B - you threw a curve ball in there with a modified rule AND a conditional!

Nice game though, good work!

That's what I got too. If you use the limited options strategy then you can get it down to two distinct diagrams that can solve all questions except for number 5.

Not a bad game. Wish I had more like this one on the real game section. I only diagrammed out three diagrams:
1. F-C-B-E-(D)-(A)
2. F-(D)-(A)-E-(B)-(C)
3. B-C-F-E-(D)-(A).
These diagrams helped me get through all of the questions, except 5, without to much trouble.

Great Game!!! Keep them coming

The rule that states that F comes before A restricts the sixth slot so that F can't be there. When E got moved to fifth, it eliminated the possibility of the AD/DA block going there (since that block needs two spaces). Also, since the question specifies that B goes before F, B can't be in the sixth slot (there'd be no room left for F). With all these restrictions on the last slot, C is the only one that can go there. From there, we know that the AD/DA block has to go in the 2nd and 3rd slots. Putting it 1st/2nd or 3rd/4th would create a situation in which B and F would be next to each other which violates the first rule. Finally, since F must come before A, F has to be first and B has to be 4th.

1) _ _ _ _ E _

2) _ A/D D/A _ E C

3) B A/D D/A F E C

Very nice explanation. You have, whether or not you know it, used important Powerscore principles in solving question #5.

I will soon post a short explanation, along with a diagram, of how #5 can be solved in about 10 seconds with the Powerscore principles.

Thanks. Yes, I'm a big believer in Powerscore's methods. Timing is always an issue for me in the games section, so I definitely would like to see how to get the answer in only 10 seconds.
